Gut+Brain = Health

Gut+Brain = Health.  We hear so much today about the brain and gut relationship. What does this mean?  What happens in your gut?  When the mucus lining of the small intestine becomes too porous, allowing toxins, food particles and pathogens to enter the blood stream it causes “leaky gut.”  Since it is in the small intestine where absorption of nutrients occurs, when there is leakage two situations occur: first, undigested proteins and pathogens end up in the blood stream, and secondly, your cells do not get the nutrition they need to maintain health. David Perlmutter, M.D. writes in his new book, Brain Maker that “90% of human illness can be traced back to an unhealthy gut.”     Amazon – Perlmutter M.D.

Why is this important for health?  You have more neurotransmitters in your gut than your brain.   The majority of the body’s serotonin, between 80-90%, can be found in the gastrointestinal tract. Serotonin that is used inside the brain must be produced within it. It is thought that serotonin can affect mood and social behavior, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory and sexual desire and function.      http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/232248.php#where_does_serotonin_come_from

Wow!   All the more reason to take your probiotics and eat your fermented veggies and take care of your colon.   Isn’t that better than an anti -depressant?   I have been taking probiotics for twenty six years!   I do not miss a day and I eat cultured vegetables, organic foods and yogurt.  I learned a lot from my own health crisis twenty plus years ago.  Today, I am  grateful to share what I learned with you so you can re-gain your vibrant health and remain healthy.

How does the imbalance occur?

First, digestion is impaired by stress, negative emotions, processed foods, inadequate chewing and improper food combining or overeating.   When the gut bacteria act on undigested food particles they make toxic gases and chemicals (endotoxins). These endotoxins damage the mucosal lining, causing increased intestinal permeability. With repeated attacks the gut lining continues to erode. Some other factors affecting leaky gut include: alcohol, caffeine, parasites and bacteria, chemical food additives, high carbohydrate diets, prescription hormones, molds and fungus, environmental and dental toxins.

By far the greatest contributors to leaky gut are anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and Motrin, Antacids, steroids such as prednisone, hydrocortisone and corticosteroids and antibiotics. When the lining gets holes in it, these pathogens, food articles and endotoxins end up in the blood stream and the body gets confused and attacks its own cells making antibodies against the invaders – auto-immune response. There are about 80 recognized auto-immune disorders including: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid arthritis, Thyroiditis, Ulcerative colitis, allergies and Multiple Sclerosis.

How do you heal your gut?

  1. Follow a Candida diet –  Candida is an overgrowth of yeast that grows in the intestines. It can cause thrush, vaginitis, bladder problems, fatigue, brain fog, virtually any thing when it is out of balance.
  2. To starve the Candida here are the rules: No sugar, gluten, dairy, nuts, mushrooms or vinegar except apple cider vinegar.
  3. Take a Probiotic such as Daily Probiotic.  Eat plain organic yogurt, kefir or cultured vegetables.  Pick up your probiotic here:  Abq Store
  4. Take HCL/Pepsin supplements before meals if the stomach acid is low.       .
  5. Digestive enzyme including protease, amylase and lipase. Other herbs can be soothing such as slippery elm and marshmallow.
  6. Take EFA’s (essential fatty acids) to lubricate the digestive tract. A combination of fish, flax and borage oil will reduce inflammation.
  7. Take a fiber supplement with a combo of the following: flax/borage seed, watermelon seed, FOS, slippery elm bark, fennel seed, and marshmallow and bladder whack leaf. Kroeger Herb’s Environmental Cleanse is a good combo. Start slowly.

  9. Take a B-complex and Vit C -3000 mg. or more per day.
  10. Give the colon a break and make smoothies or green drinks. Make a complete meal with Tonic Alchemy, Whey or Rice protein powder, flax oil and water or Rice Dream.
